Weekend in Sevilla and Cordoba
Off again! This time somewhere close (ish) to home! Surprisingly, it was cheaper to fly, then to train to Sevilla, so off we went! A super early flight out of Madrid, landing us in Sevilla at 9:00am!
We checked into our Airbnb, and planned out our weekend. Little did we know, that we would not even sort of stick to that plan!
Friday:
We walked to Mercado Lonja del Barranco, to eat lunch by the river! We enjoyed paella and salmoreja (although we thought we ordered something completely different). Nicky met us there, and we began our "sightseeing". We walked along the river to one of Nicky's favorite spots for a drink! My bloody mary was AWFUL, but everything else was great.
Then we ventured through the city and walked by the cathedral and the Alcazar. We decided not to enter either place as the lines were very long and we rather get a drink! The Gamecocks were playing in the Sweet Sixteen this night, tip-off at midnight. We thought it would be a grand idea to start pre gaming 8 hours in advanced. So our first drink stop was 1 liter mojitos... and we were off. Next went to a cute cafe for a beer, and then to a cheap spot for $1 beers and $1 tapas. Nicky's "host brothers" picked us up and took us back to their apartment to meet Nicky's host mom! Very nice lady, and cool to see where he lives! We picked up 8 40oz beers and started out tailgate! In Sevilla, many of the young people drink in the fairgrounds before a night out to enjoy the sunset. We were locals, and lived as they lived for the evening! They drove us all around the city to pick up more friends and more beer. They were CRAZY drivers, probably not our best move, but we will remember this night forever! After watching the sunset, listening to music, and tinkling in the dirt, we decided we were cold and needed food! So the boys drove us to a small restaurant for food and beer, before we landed at Phoenix Bar, and Irish Pub, and the only place in town showing the game.
We enjoyed watching the GAMECOCKS WIN! Nicky was pretty slumped, he attempted to order 20 beers all at once, thank goodness a nice man stopped him, so we sent him home, and all went home shortly after.
Saturday:
We all felt like we were hit by a giant freight train. 8 hours of pre gaming was not our best idea. We didn't get out of the house until noon, and walked around for about an hour before we found a spot to eat lunch at! We ate outside at a place with a view of the cathedral! And it didn't take long after lunch before we stopped for gelato! It was a day filled with quick rain showers. But we braved the rain, and waited in line to see the famous Alcazar. It was amazing, we were thrilled that we decided to wait! Only $2 entry for students, it was a steal! Really really mind blowing, how massive and ornate this property was. Still not feeling 100%, we walked home and took a nap. We all planned on waking up and going out for dinner but that simply was not in the cards. We ordered delivery from a delicious salad restaurant called Just Good. A much needed cleansing and healthy meal. And right back to bed!
Sunday:
We were tired of the rain in Sevilla, and felt like we had seen everything we needed to! $20 round trip train ticket to Cordoba...why not!? We took an early hour long train to Cordoba! So so happy we did! We had a beautiful sunny day. We started at the Alcazar of the Christian Kings. Not nearly as extravagant as the one in Sevilla, but still amazing. After an hour in there, we tried to find a lunch place on the river, and ended up at yet another gelato place! We walked in and out of the famous streets filled with flower pots all over the walls! Absolutely stunning. We walked across the UNESCO bridge to the old town, before we went to lunch! After a yummy and cheap meal at La Sureña, we walked through the markets and purchased a couple of springtime shoes! Just in time to catch out 4 o'clock train back to Sevilla!
We all went on a run to Plaza de España before Maggie and Kenley left for their flight home. Carolyn, Taylor, and I had an extra night...thank goodness...because tonight was the ELITE EIGHT game. We walked 30 minuted in the pouring rain to meet Nicky and Emma Lynch (also studying in Sevilla) at Phoenix Bar to watch the game. We cheered on the Gamecocks to victory with a Gamecock dad, and another BT boy who randomly walked into the bar! Small world. After a night of nachos and beer, we taxied home and woke up very early to fly back to Madrid and make it to class on time!
Great great weekend. WE LOVE SEVILLA and CORDOBA! GO GAMECOCKS.
