50 Shades of Madrid!!!

OUR FIRST FULL WEEK IN OUR NEW HOME!!!!!

We arrived at 6am Monday morning from Dublin EXHAUSTED with class at 3pm! We survived... barely... ate a quick dinner and off to sleep we went!

Tuesday:
Celebrating Galentines day in Madrid consisted of a nice Mexican meal at La Mordida and a viewing of 50 Shades Darker. To top it off we ended the night with Green Tea Gelato from our new favorite local place Mistura!

Thursday:
KAPITAL... the darkest shade of Madrid! Or the brightest depending on how you look at it! Thursday night was Anti-Valentine party at Kapital, one of the largest night clubs in Europe, towering 7 stories high! We finished our day with a nice work out and delicious fresh juice at _____. They go into the market and freshly cut the fruits and juice them right in front of you! After a quick summer internship interview with my new boss, and our usual drinks and croquettes at El Tigre, we were off to a free night at Kapital, which is unheard of! It's normally an $18 cover!!! After some trouble waiting in line and trying to figure out how to get in for free... WE MADE IT! We went to the third floor, found ourselves a reserved table, and danced the night away! Highlight of the night was the dub step High School Musical Remix. We decided to burn off some cals and walk home... about 2 miles... but we accidentally stopped for cheese rolls at Picollo on the way home. They were DELISH!

Friday was off to a late start... this whole out till 5am thing can really take a toll on you. Carolyn sleeps over in our guest bedroom on club nights for safety and fun... so once we all got rolling we met Kenley at La Bicicleta for Brunch. We had delicious matcha tea, nachos, and a meat and cheese platter! Then we decided to hit a few shops for their "rabajas" and try Spain's infamous chocolate and churros. We shopped till we dropped, then sat down and ate churros. Through communication difficulties we ordered A TON. They give you a pile of churros with a coffee cup full of thick hot chocolate that you dip you churros in. Glad we did it, but we decided we didn't need to do it again. After dinner we decided to go to a Flamenco show. We walk into a small restaurant with a tiny square stage no bigger than 10ft by 10ft. We received our included glass of sangria and the show began! The stage consisted of a singer, a guitar player, 2 men dancers, and a woman dancer. It was interesting to say the least and not at all what we expected... pictures below! There was lots of stomping, yelling, and clapping. Thankfully the show lasted an hour, because we weren't sure how much more we could take. We walked carol home and Maggie, Kenley, Madison, and I accidentally found ourselves at Tommy Mel's, a traditional 60s American Diner. We ended the night with some shakes and mozza sticks, resting up for our big night tomorrow!

MARSHMELLO!!!
Saturday was the arrival of Maggie's boo thang, our friend Connor from USC! He's really into DJ's and EDM so we all planned to go to the Marshmello concert! We started our day off with some more rabajas. Carolyn and I wanted to have matching EDM outfits so we hunted in and out of every store. The final verdict was silver tennis shoes from Primark and a silver skirt from Mango! We met at Maggie and Kenley's before heading out for the night. We planned to go get dollar tacos and then beer buckets... but on our way we passed El Tigre and couldn't pass it up! After our usual croquettes and vodka tonics at El Tigre we headed to the taco place. It had a line circling the square so we decided to hit up the beer bucket place instead. We sat outside and ordered a few beer buckets and a couple platters of meat and cheese. Two Michigan boys passed our table and said they were visiting and asked for advice on where to go for drinks. We told them to pull up a chair and join us! After our buckets of beer we decided to head toward the concert and stop at a few bars on the way. Our first bar was a local bar where we had some beers. Our next stop was a  "Speak Easy" so they say. We walked into a restaurant and sat down to order drinks... they told us no and took us out side, next door. They unlocked a door and walked us downstairs into a bar, which we later figure out was attached to the original restaurant. After a few drinks and pictures, we were off to the concert and still had our new Michigan friends! We get to the line and they ask for our ID, ticket, and Passport. Carolyn and our new friends walked in without a problem and they didn't have tickets or a passport! I proceeded to say to the bouncer,  "I don't carry my passport, thats dangerous." He agreed and let me through. Madison, Connor, Kenley, Maggie, and 2 other guys we were with were denied access. Madison was determined and got back in line with some spanish people and made her way through. Our other friends caused a scene, some even shed some tears, and left defeated and maybe a little too intoxicated. Marshmello was LIT. We had a blast, but were sad all our friends weren't able to enjoy with us. We ubered home and went right to sleep.

Sunday, we were awoken by a 10am knock on our door by Carolyn in full EDM gear... but thats a story for another time. We proceeded to sleep until 1 and then decided to hit up the diner for a delicious burger and shake. We were disappointed in our meal and decided we will not return, but glad we experienced it. Nicky, Kelly's bf and friend from USC, flew in from Switzerland to Madrid and his train to Seville where he is studying was not until the morning so... SLEEPOVER! He arrived around dinner we went to a little Greek joint near our place and ate Spanikopita. It was DELISH and DIRT CHEAP, which Nicky missed because he said Switzerland is ridiculously expensive. We went home and chatted for a bit and headed to bed early after a long week. Nicky did tell us how amazing Switzerland is and how we MUST go... so trying to figure that into our schedule as we speak!

Signing off,
Taylor
