London London London
After a quick week of school we were off again to London!
A stressful airport experience, complete with a long security line started our trip off! We arrived at Stansted Airport, and took a 40 minute train ride into the city. Taylor and I met our friends at the AirBnb, and were out the door in 15 minutes. Wasting no time! We bought Hop on Hop off bus tickets to get us around the city all weekend -- and our first stop was Buckingham Palace. Unfortunately, we did not make it in time to see the "changing of the guards" but still experienced a beautiful walk through the park and the amazing views of the Palace!
We all decided to get our barrings, and just ride for the rest of the afternoon. So we did just that! We sat on the roof of the double decker bus and rode around the city for a couple of hours! Just before the sun went down, we hopped off at the most authentic Fish N' Chips spot in London, Golden Hind. It did not disappoint! AMAZING. We ate fast, because we had to be at Matilda before the show started! We got there just in time, and literally RAN to our seats.
The show was incredible, the kids were so talented, and it was a fabulous production. The little actress who played Matilda...so so great. After a long day of travel, we retired early and went to sleep.
Saturday:
Maggie, Taylor, and I woke up early and went for a run, and then we all met for brunch at The Modern Pantry. We enjoyed quinoa porridge, potato hash, and great toast with jam! And now more sightseeing. We took a ferry in the Thames River and saw the London Bridge and the London Eye from the river! As soon as we were dropped off, we walked near the Westminster Bridge and were taken back by the infinite bouquets of flowers, letters, and tributes to the lives that were lost during the recent terrorist attack. A very interesting time to be in London. All of this was right in front of Big Ben and the Parliament, which is usually a very lively happy place, was a bit somber as everyone was respectful of the recent event.
After a few pictures in front of Big Ben and in the telephone booth, we rushed to high tea! We sat down in a whimsical cafe in a department store, and enjoyed delicious tea in floral cups with scones!
After tea, we planned on going to the Camden Markets for dinner, but realized they had already closed! So we found ourselves eating the trendy snack "bubble waffles" for dinner!
GAMENIGHT! Tonight the Gamecocks played Gonzaga in the Final Four. We found a great bar to watch the game, and ordered pitchers of London Pale Ale and some nachos! A very odd dad was the only one cheering for Gonzaga, and kept bugging us all night. But hey, he gave Kenley a beer, so I guess we can give him a break! After a great game and a tough loss, we went right to sleep!
Sunday:
We slept in quite a bit, before we took a very long yet BEAUTIFUL walk along the canal to the Camden Markets. Camden is a very urban and trendy area filled with A TON of street food and small market style vendors. Taylor and I shared a Colombian as ado bowl as well as steak and chips! So so tasty. And for dessert, a vegan ice cream sandwich and milkshake!
We were SO FULL, and took the long walk back to the city. We stopped for a tea at Pret, and later another mango bubble tea. It was a tea filled weekend.
By this time, we felt we had seen it all, and as we have little free time in this busy European life, we decided to treat ourself to a movie! We grabbed sushi and then went to the 8 o'clock showing of Beauty and the Beast. We indulged in a large sweet popcorn and coke! Great last evening in London.
Woke up at 3am to make our 6am flight in Madrid.
London has become our new favorite!
