Poland and Berlin - Mother's Day
Wow -- what a weekend.
We were lucky enough to have both Mom and Nannie fly to Europe for Mother's Day 2017. All three generations together makes for a fun few days!
Mom and Nannie flew into Madrid, checked into their hotel, and immediately Ubered to our campus. It was graduation day, so they sat and watched four boring speeches, and saw us walk across the stage to accept our diplomas! After school, they climbed five flights of stairs all the way up to our apartment! After a lot of laughs and a mini apartment tour, we walked to one of our favorite bars "Lateral" to drink mojitos! Nannie still thinks this was the best mojito she has ever had.
After drinks, we stopped in our favorite market, San Miguel to grab a quick olive tapa before dinner! We met Maggie and Sofa for dinner at a typical Spanish restaurant and enjoyed great company. After an irish coffee for dessert, we decided to go have one more drink in Nannis and Mom's hotel bar. One more drink turned into three pitchers of Sangria....it was finally time for bed!
We woke up the next morning and had an AMAZING breakfast at the hotel next door -- one of the best buffets we have ever seen. After lunch, we walked in the rain to see Plaza Mayor. We tried to get cookies from the nuns but unfortunately the kitchen was closed! Veuve Time! We went to a little Veuve Cliquot champagne bar and had two CHEAP bottles of Veuve, before we had to catch our plane to Warsaw, Poland!
We landed and Poland, and could not wait another second to eat PEROGIES! We walked to a little restaurant near our hotel, and had our very first authentic Polish dinner. Perogies, potato cakes, and sauerkraut! Nannie's margarita was the talk of the table -- they tried to serve it with vodka, but after a big discussion they brought a strawberry daiquiri with a shot of tequila on the side! HILARIOUS. Our hotel was absolutely beautiful, so we went home and got a good night sleep before a big first day in the city.
We woke up and went straight to POLISH COOKING CLASS. It was awesome, we loved our chef, and really enjoyed learning how to make homemade perogies. Throughout the afternoon, we tasted six different types of vodkas, and became master chefs!
After class, we took a walk around Old Town, inside the wall. Not too much to do there..but we managed to have an awesome time! We started at a little cafe, and the "Spoon Man" fell in love with Nannie! Too funny. Later we landed at what seemed like the only restaurant that served Veuve Cliquot in the entire city! And they only had one bottle left. We enjoyed sitting outside, and enjoyed every last sip of champagne. On our way home, we walked right into a Catholic Procession that was absolutely beautiful! Hundreds of people walking the streets of Warsaw singing in unison. We followed the line taking pictures in amazement. We finished the night at one of the nicest hotels in Warsaw after we showered and enjoyed......I bet you can guess... MORE VEUVE!
Another day! What we thought was going to be a luxurious private tour of Warsaw, turned out to be quite the adventure. A rickety old bus picks us up, with two other passengers inside and the tour began! We could hardly hear what the bus driver had to say, as there was no microphone. So we just bumped up and down and looked out the window. We learned all about communist Poland, and visited a replica museum of an old communist apartment. Throughout the day our bus would stop, or not start, our driver even got out to push a few times! We ended up switching cars halfway through. It was CRAZY. We dined at a local Polish cafeteria, and saw some local color! When the tour was over we scurried back to our hotel had a bottle of VUEVE and hopped in a cab... the same one that had dropped us off from the airport! We arrive to the airport and realize its the WRONG ONE! We didn't even stop to think their might be two airports. SO we hopped in a new cab and zoomed to the RIGHT airport. Despite the scare, we arrived with plenty of time, boarded our plane, and we we're off!
We landed in Berlin and went straight to our hotel. We thought about going somewhere for dinner... but to our surprise the hotel had its own little cafe on the top floor... with a SELF SERVICE BAR. You can imagine our crew's excitement. So after some snacks and drinks, and an odd German Cola, we were off to bed.
We all met at our little top floor cafe for fresh eggs and a self served bottle of CHAMPAGNE! We headed to the Neues museum to see the famous Egyptian lady statue. Nefertiti was beautiful for being 3362 years old, only a few wrinkles in sight! Then we went to the Stazi Jail and toured the museum hearing of peoples trials and tribulations. We then headed over to the Ritz for drinks and lunch. The drink menu was AMAZING. Beautiful, ornate drinks that came out in cool containers (pictures below). Next, we hurried over to the Underground Berlin Wall Tour. It was amazing the stories we heard about people digging under ground tunnels and escaping. Or the people that escaped through the railroad tracks, or people that zip lined over the wall from their home to the other side. The stories took our breath away and made Mom and Nannie shed some tears. After a history filled day we rode back to the hotel to grab our bags and leave :( Tay and I flew back to Madrid and Nannie and Mom flew to Amsterdam... but thats a tale for a different time.
